Utility + AI: Faster, Smarter Product Innovation
Share this insight

In Utility’s 13th year, we continue to evolve with a primary focus on helping clients reach success faster. Speed, ultimately, is what most technological advancements aim to address. Of course, there are underlying, non-negotiable quality factors and priorities, such as user happiness, code hygiene, product scalability, security, and accessibility. But ultimately, it's the velocity at which we're able to accomplish these goals that can make all the difference, especially in a crowded world of creators and innovators. In other words, if you're able to achieve quality, efficacy, and validation faster, you're winning.

For years, the increased velocity that gives both our enterprise and startup clients an edge has been a result of many factors, including process management, engineering talent, homegrown tooling, tech integrations, code libraries, automated testing, and other strategies that enable us to provide clients with a competitive advantage. But now there's a new kid on the block.

Enter: AI

We are not just in the middle of a tech evolution—it's a “life as we know it” revolution, where AI advancements are supercharging every facet of our daily lives, and if they haven't yet, they will soon, and this is only the very tip of the iceberg. It’s only just begun. The power of AI is no longer hypothetical—it's real. Artificial intelligence isn't just something you train, like machine learning has helped us do for so many years—it is “intelligent” before you even get your hands on it, with infinite additive abilities to learn about you, your preferences, your business, your goals, and outcomes. The time savings and operational efficiencies are exponential to anything we have seen, and over the next few years, will completely rewrite how we think about product development.

However, the fact that useful AI has arrived doesn't necessarily mean full industry turnover, instantly. This kid will take time to grow up, even if growth hormones are accelerating the process.

In the meantime, as a product agency that specializes in designing and building custom applications and software platforms for clients, we have fully immersed ourselves in the AI waters over the past few years, so we are always ready for any new waves of progress. Our role when partnering with innovative clients is to bring complex digital products to market faster and more efficiently than they could themselves, due to our years of proven processes and unique “zero to one” experiences standing up new tech ventures.

To achieve these heightened results with our client partners, it's important to delineate the two distinct areas of AI we are focused on as an agency:

  1. AI the Accelerator -- Using AI tools and innovations to build and release software and applications faster
  2. AI the Solution -- Building and implementing novel AI solutions to solve client business goals

1. AI the Accelerator

Creating software-based applications (e.g., mobile apps, web apps, desktop apps, etc.) requires a tremendous amount of knowledge of the complex parts needed to craft and launch, or re-launch, a new tech venture. The work is heavy and time-consuming, requiring attention to detail and expertise to ensure you're never going backwards and can scale the product framework in unlimited directions.

Thankfully, the last year has seen a barrage of AI-related tools and intelligence that help make the execution just a bit easier. Assuming the right usage and implementation, AI can now significantly accelerate various parts of the lengthy process. From Research & Design, to Backend & Frontend Development, all the way through Testing & Launch, there are AI tools that aim to assist the execution. Every week, dozens of headlines are made with new attempts to make designing, engineering, and product management more efficient.

Some of the most exciting AI advancements we’re utilizing to speed up product development for our clients’ projects:

Research & Design: Uncovering Insights and Ideating Faster

Understanding user needs, market gaps, and product opportunities has always been foundational to our process. Now, AI helps us do it with greater speed and depth. AI-powered product exploration, brainstorming and spec documentation have been accelerated by tools like ChatGPT and other LLM-based platforms. We’re seeing a boost in the assistance of feature definition exercises, user research, competitor benchmarking, brainstorming workshops, roadmap prioritization, and refinement documentation. AI is assisting product strategists and managers in partnering with stakeholders to craft smart roadmaps and technical business plans faster and more efficiently than was ever possible.

While human-centered design and visual aesthetic are still top manual-led priorities in crafting new digital product experiences, our design team has adopted AI as a creative partner to ideate faster and validate concepts earlier. From creative brainstorming to user experience flow-mapping, to auto-generated prototypes and demos for product validation, we continue to explore how AI advancements can help us define, design and validate faster. With these generative AI tools, we can generate hundreds of variations — from text prompts to visual assets — in minutes. This rapid ideation fuels client workshops, bringing fresh, dynamic ideas to the table. And in some cases, utilizing some of the leading platform-based AI development ecosystems like Loveable, Bolt, or Replit, can bring much more feature-rich application development to the table in early product and validation cycles before truly embarking on a fuller “zero to one” software development buildout.

For a fitness client, we leveraged AI to generate a wide range of design and content variations — from onboarding flows to workout discovery interfaces. By rapidly testing these AI-generated variations in real-world scenarios, we helped pinpoint the most engaging user journey, leading to an increase in member sign-ups.

Backend & Frontend Development: Supercharging Implementation

Whether we’re building native mobile apps or complex web platforms, our engineers use AI to boost velocity and code quality across the board. Today’s AI coding “co-pilots” are embedded into the workflow of our engineering processes, helping to make our developers more efficient and performant than was ever possible before. Coding assistant platforms like Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Windsurf are leading the way with intelligent accelerators, such as context-aware code suggestions, function generation in real-time, inline conversations and refactors, as well as other strong AI-assist intelligence geared towards building full-stack applications more efficiently. GitHub Copilot and Codeium serve as real-time collaborators, suggesting syntax, functions, and logic as we code, while Cursor and Continue.dev can help scaffold API integrations, route handlers, and boilerplate setup with natural language prompts. All the AI advancements we’re experimenting with help us ship products faster, ultimately getting in front of users earlier to test, refine, and grow the digital products we launch with our clients.

The launch of Agent Mode in VS Code unlocks a new era of software development — empowering developers to build, debug, and iterate at lightning speed with AI-driven context and precision without being locked into a particular LLM.

Testing & Launch: Smarter QA and Continuous Deployment

AI isn't just for building the product — it also helps us drive adoption, personalize messaging, and analyze campaign performance with more clarity. We’re fanatical about the science behind how users engage, what makes them tick, and what’s going to move the needle. We spend a lot of time working through A/B testing growth campaigns, studying user behavior, and making sure we’re optimizing growth budgets for purposes of ROI and scale. Audience targeting and messaging can be assisted by tools like Mutiny and Copy.ai, which help craft high-converting landing pages and segment messaging dynamically. Ad creative generation can be accelerated and experimented with tools like AdCreative.ai and Pencil to test dozens of ad variations with performance predictions built in. Analytics and attribution benefit from AI platforms, where tools like Mixpanel surface user behavior patterns and churn risk through automated analysis. Overall, we make faster, data-informed decisions about what works — optimizing spend, increasing conversion rates, and scaling growth more efficiently.

2. AI the Solution

The real power of AI isn't just in improving how we work internally — it's in what we can help our clients build, from smarter experiences to entirely new business models. At Utility, we're designing and delivering AI-powered solutions that transform customer experiences, streamline internal operations, and unlock product features that weren’t even possible a year ago.

Here’s a look at the different categories of AI solutions we’re building for clients — and how they’re delivering business impact.

Approaching & Navigating AI

Building truly AI-powered solutions is not simple. It requires a convergence of disciplines—machine learning, data engineering, software development, and product design—all working together.

What’s involved?

  1. Problem Definition
You need a problem where intelligence actually creates value. Not everything should be “AI-powered.” (Nobody needs an AI-powered calculator.)

  2. Data Strategy
AI systems are only as smart as the data they’re trained on. That means:
    • Do you have proprietary data?
    • Is it clean, labeled, and structured?
    • Are there ethical or privacy concerns?

  3. Model Selection or Training
Depending on your needs, you might:
    • Fine-tune an existing large language model (LLM)
    • Train a custom model for your specific domain
    • Use a narrow, purpose-built model (e.g. for fraud detection)

  4. Human-in-the-Loop Feedback
The best AI products often include humans in key points—reviewing, correcting, or guiding the system as it learns.

  5. Continuous Learning and Monitoring
AI products don’t ship once and forget. They evolve. Which means constant oversight, evaluation, and iteration.

Advice for newbies?

If you’re unsure how to approach AI in your organization, here’s our playbook:

  1. Don’t chase AI for the sake of AI.
Start with user problems or business inefficiencies. Then ask: could intelligence solve this better than logic?

  2. Separate your workflows.
One team might focus on improving velocity using AI tools. Another might explore long-term innovation through AI-powered experiences. Don’t mix them too early.

  3. Invest in your data now.
Even if you’re not building AI today, owning structured, clean, labeled data gives you leverage tomorrow. Start building your dataset today.

  4. Measure AI by outcomes, not “coolness.”
An AI feature no one uses isn’t innovation—it’s distraction. Solve something real.

  5. Choose partners who know both sides of the equation.
You need people who understand both how to build efficiently with AI and how to design thoughtful experiences powered by it.
